BREAKING: Woman, 71, Killed As Car Backs Out Of NE ABQ Driveway

A 71-year-old woman is dead after she was struck by a vehicle backing out of a driveway on the 1400 block of Wellesley NE, according to police.

The woman, Loretta Wagy lives in the neighborhood and walks nearly eight miles through it every day with the help of a baby stroller, according to an email from APD spokesman Rob Gibbs. Wagy was legally blind and deaf, according to Gibbs.

A female driver was backing out of the driveway at 9:19 a.m. when she heard a “thud,” Gibbs said in his email. The driver stopped, got out of her vehicle and found Wagy lying on the street.Wagy was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

“It is believed Ms. Wagy walks on the street near the curb to avoid the ups & downs of driveways that would hamper her in walking,” Gibbs wrote.

The driver had not been drinking alcohol, according to Gibbs. It is unclear whether she will face charges.
