It’s official: Martin Heinrich is a U.S. Senator from New Mexico and Michelle Lujan Grisham is the state’s 1st District representative.
Heinrich and Lujan Grisham, both Democrats, were sworn in just after 10 a.m. New Mexico time in the House and Senate Chambers.
Heinrich, who served two terms in the U.S. House, told me the day was “pretty surreal” and he was honored to represent New Mexico in the U.S. Senate.
Lujan Grisham,a former state cabinet secretary and county commissioner, told me she was sad her father, who died in 2011, couldn’t be witness her swearing-in but that she was “excited” and that there is “a lot of work to do.”
Dozens of well-wishers crammed into Capitol Hill receptions for both members.
Meanwhile, Sen. Tom Udall is about to hold a press conference on his effort to reform Senate rules and blunt the impact of the filibuster.
