New Mexico due for an arctic blast

Forecasters have their eye on a classic “arctic express” that could be headed toward New Mexico beginning Saturday and extending well into next week. “It’s going to get cold,” Weather Service forecaster Jennifer Palucki said during a briefing this afternoon for media and emergency services managers.

Kerry Jones, one of Palucki’s colleagues, showed the latest forecast map with a deep mass of cold air driving down into New Mexico from the Yukon. By Sunday morning Albuquerque low temperatures could be in the teens, with colder temperatures possible into next week. It’s still early in the forecast window, so this could change, but it’s a potentially serious cold event worth paying attention to. I’ll post updates here, or go directly to the Weather Service for the straight stuff. Here’s Kerry’s Monday map:
