Folks in newsrooms generally have some election fatigue after the whirlwind of national elections. But bear with me, because voting is underway for the Albuquerque Public Schools.
This year, voters will be asked to fill four of the seven seats on the board, and also asked to approve or deny two funding questions that total $368 million for school renovations and maintenance. Specifically, there will be $200 million in bonds and $168 million in property taxes. Taxes would stay at their current rate, not increase. This morning, I interviewed the APS capital staff about the bond question, and I’ll have a story about that … sometime soon when I get around to it. Also, my colleague Astrid Galvan will bring you coverage of the election for the CNM governing board.
In the meantime, early voting is already going on! Here are the locations, courtesy of the lovely Maggie Toulouse Oliver. If you like voting on election day (the pageant of democracy and whatnot), the election is Feb. 5, and you have more choices on where to vote.
The Journal will be publishing questionnaires next week from the school board candidates. In the meantime, here’s my story about a recent candidate forum, and here is APS’ comprehensive election page, including handy maps to see which district you live in and candidates’ questionnaire responses.
