County to Continue Jail Methadone through June

Bernalillo County commissioners want to continue the jail methadone program through June 30, but it’s not clear they’ll keep it around after that.

They voted unanimously tonight to extend the program, which costs $37,500, temporarily. In the meantime, the county intends to hire UNM to study the methadone program’s costs, benefits and recidivism data.

Some of the commission’s questions for jail staff suggest skepticism about the program. On the other hand, some experts testified in favor of keeping it going.

I’ll have rundown for you in tomorrow’s paper.
