Demonettes hold off ‘Devils

Jackie Martinez and Kayla Herrera each scored 22 points to help Santa Fe fend off Espanola Valley in both teams’ District 2-4A opener.

The 64-57 victory Tuesday night at the Toby Roybal Memorial Gymnasium was the Demonette’s 17th-straight win. Class 4A’s top-ranked team, Santa Fe, is the lone remaining undefeated program in the state, regardless of classification.

Espanola Valley (9-7), rallying from a 14-point first-half deficit, closed to within three — 58-55 — inside the final minute, before Santa Fe (17-0) ended the game from the foul line. Martinez and Herrera combined to go 4-for-4 from the stripe down the stretch to seal the win. Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage was the Demonettes’ other high scorer with 15 points.

Sundevils senior Lauren Quintana led the Espanola Valley comeback attempt, scoring a game-high 32 points. Eighth-grader Alexis Lovato was Espanola Valley’s other high scorer with 12 points.
