Actor Steven Seagal took a break from filming “Force of Execution” in Albuquerque and headed south to Las Cruces on Tuesday.
The special — and unexpected — trip was to be sworn in as a Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputy.
Undersheriff Eddie Lerma arranged to have Seagal sworn-in as a deputy in Doña Ana County as part of future training on border issues, and to execute police work if necessary.
According to a sheriff’s spokeswoman Seagal is a considered a reserve officer and, according New Mexico law, can only carry out police work while with a commissioned peace officer. Seagal is expected to take part in a border security training in the coming months. The action star asked that no pictures or video be taken of the ceremony, according to sheriff’s officials.
According to a press release, Sheriff Todd Garrison read Seagal his oath during a brief, informal ceremony at the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department main headquarters.
“Mr. Seagal has spent decades in law enforcement training, and has a special interest in the unique challenges our department faces along the border,” said Lerma. “He has been an asset to other border communities, where he believes public safety is of particular concern. We are honored to bring that experience to this department as well.”
Seagal has 25 years of experience in law enforcement and holds credentials in several border communities, including Hudspeth County, Texas and Maricopa County, Ariz. which he attained in 2011.
Seagal is currently filing “Force of Execution” in Albuquerque and stars as Elijah Kane in the ReelzChannel’s “True Justice,” which is currently airing on the Albuquerque-based channel.
He has starred in movies such as “Above the Law” and “Under Siege.”
