BREAKING: Bus Driver Suspected of Having Meth

The driver of an Albuquerque Public Schools bus that lost its rear axle and apparently crashed is suspected of having methamphetamine with him, University of New Mexico police said.

The driver was sent to UNM Hospital on Wednesday after the bus crashed on Lead Avenue and Solano Drive. It was there that doctors found on him what they believed to be drugs, and called UNM police, a spokesman said.

UNM police responded and performed a field test, which found it was meth. Police did not arrest the man because they want the drug to be formally tested in a lab before going forward, the spokesman said. Once the substance has been tested again UNM police will forward the case to the District Attorney’s Office.

The bus had just dropped off children at Zia Elementary school when it crashed. It was headed back to a lot owned by Beal Company, a contractor APS uses for bus services.
