At the Roundhouse: Today

There will be a memorial service today in the Capitol Rotunda for Fabián Chávez Jr., the late but memorable New Mexico Senate majority leader. At The Roundhouse

Organizers are calling it a celebration of his life and an opportunity to visit with family members. It  will run from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Former Gov. Jerry Apodaca, once a state senator himself, is scheduled to speak, along with many current New Mexico leaders.

There were will be a Rosary  later today at St Francis Cathedral Basilica in Santa Fe, starting at  7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held Thursday, January 24th, at St Francis Cathedral Basilica, starting at 10 a.m. Burial will be  Santa Fe National Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Ponce de Leon Independent Living, 640 Alta Vista, Santa Fe, N.M., at 87505 or PMS Hospice, 1400 Chama Ave., Santa Fe, N.M. 87505.

More later on other goings on at the Roundhouse. Meanwhile, here’s a photo of Chávez in which I can see  a characteristic merry glint in his eye.  Indeed, he was a merry but not so old seeming soul, right up until the death of his wife, Coral Jeanne, in 2006. Chávez, 88, died Sunday in his hometown, Santa Fe.
