Banana Republic Sticking to Mall Spot

While Gap has traded Coronado Center for nearby ABQ Uptown, sister brand Banana Republic is staying put inside Coronado for now.

A Gap, Inc. spokesperson says the company isn’t currently relocating New Mexico’s only Banana Republic store.

“There are no moves planned for that store at this time,” spokesperson Andrea Hicklin said in an email.

Banana Republic is located on Coronado Center’s upper level, not far from the two storefronts Gap recently vacated in favor of an ABQ Uptown location.

Hicklin said Gap left Coronado as part of a long-term real-estate strategy for the brand. The Coronado stores were among the final closures associated with that 2007 plan.

“We want each of our stores to be the best possible representation of who we are — a well-loved American brand known for its optimistic, casual style,” Hicklin said.

The new ABQ Uptown Gap opened to shoppers this week and will hold a grand-opening celebration on Saturday.

At 10,529 square feet, it is the largest Gap store in New Mexico. It sells the brand’s adult, kid, and baby lines under one roof.
