ABQ Council to Hear Another POC Proposal

There’s now bipartisan legislation headed to the City Council to launch an overhaul of the police-oversight ordinance.

Councilor Brad Winter, a Republican, and Rey Garduño, a Democrat, are sponsoring a proposal to create a seven-member task force that would hold town-hall meetings and develop suggestions for revising the ordinance. The group would be called to provide recommendations by the end of the year.

“As a member of the City Council for 14 years, this commission is important and necessary for our citizens to have a voice that will help build confidence in our Albuquerque Police Department,” Winter said.

Garduño added: “Members of the public have been asking for changes and it’s vital we have participation from a cross section of stakeholders in Albuquerque.”

A separate proposal also calling for meetings and the hiring of an analyst has been sponsored by Council President Dan Lewis and Councilor Don Harris, both Republicans.
