Breaking: House Committee Approves Same-Sex Marriage Measure on 3-2 Vote

A proposed constitutional amendment that would make same-sex marriage legal in New Mexico passed its first legislative hurdle today, when members of a House panel voted 3-2 to move it forward.

The vote in the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee broke down along party lines, with Democrats voting in favor of the measure and Republicans voting in opposition.

House Joint Resolution 3 is sponsored by Rep. Brian Egolf, D-Santa Fe. It is one of several measures dealing with the definition of marriage that are pending in the Legislature (you can read more about them by clicking here).

The measure would add New Mexico to the growing list of states that issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, but would not require churches or other religious institutions to perform such ceremonies if it conflicted with their beliefs.
