NEW MEXICO BOOK NOTES

C.S. Merrill will have an informal chat and sign her book “Weekends with O’Keeffe” at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Coronado Shopping Center, 6600 Menaul NE.

In 1973 Georgia O’Keeffe employed Merrill to catalog her library for her estate. Over seven years, Merrill was called upon for secretarial assistance, cooking and personal care for the artist.

AT UNM BOOKSTORE: Joanne Bodin will be giving an author talk and sign her award-winning novel “Walking Fish” along with her book of poetry, “Piggybacked,” at noon Saturday, Feb. 9 at the bookstore on the University of New Mexico campus. She describes “Walking Fish” as a quirky story about the countercultures of the Sixties generation. It won the New Mexico Book Award in gay/lesbian fiction.

ALAMOSA BOOKS: Lauren Bjorkman will be at an author event for her book “Miss Fortune Cookie” at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8 at the bookstore on the northwest corner of Paseo del Norte and Ventura NE.

In the book, Erin, a non-Chinese teenager living in San Francisco’s Chinatown, ghostwrites an online advice column, but when a reply to her ex-best friend backfires, Erin’s carefully constructed life take a crazy spin.

MENTAL ILLNESS AND CULTURES: Clinical psychologist G.L. Zieman, Ph.D., will be at a book event combined with a lecture at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6 to discuss her book “Shrink on the Loose: Therapy in Unusual Locations.” The evening is titled “Mental Illness Across Time and Cultures: Why Freud Never Treated PTSD & Dr. Phil Doesn’t Diagnose Amok.” The event will be in Simms Auditorium at Albuquerque Academy, 6400 Wyoming NE. There is no charge, but those planning to attend should register in advance at www.aa.edu/communityacademy.

AT THE NATIONAL HISPANIC CULTURAL CENTER: Malín Alegría will discuss, read from and sign her “Border Town” young adult novels at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 in the center’s Salón Ortega in the History & Literary Arts Building.

Set in fictional Dos Rios, Texas, the “Border Town” series chronicles high school sophomore Fabiola Garza’s experiences and the ways in which she must navigate generational, political and physical borders of all kinds.

AT BOOKWORKS: Albuquerque poet John Tritica launches his new book of poetry, “Standing in Astonishment,” (La Alameda Press) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7. ABQ Slams Master and National Poetry Slam Champion Damien Flores till introduce his former teacher.

At 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 Kathy Flynn explores New Mexico’s unique landscapes with a talk about her new book “Public Art and Architecture in New Mexico.” The book gives readers directions to the state’s New Deal treasures and to building and bridges, murals and sculptures, paintings and the people who made them.
