A 27-year-old Santa Fe man has been charged with aggravated battery for biting off a piece of his ex-girlfriend’s big toe on Sunday.
And the injured woman says this isn’t the first time Daniel Anaya chomped her. He bit the big toe on her other foot a few months ago — an incident which ended their four-year relationship, the woman told police.
KOAT reported that Anaya works in the shoe department of a local store.
Santa Fe County jail records show that Anaya was booked into the jail on an arrest warrant Wednesday.
A Santa Fe Police Department criminal complaint charges him with burglary, false imprisonment, interference with communication and aggravated battery against a household member.
The last charge, according to the complaint, is for biting the woman’s “big left toe, removing flesh and a portion of the bone.”
The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment after reporting the most recent biting on Sunday. A photo the police took as evidence shows the mangled toe.
Anaya’s ex-girfriend called police to her apartment on Entrada de Milagro in south Santa Fe about 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
According to the police report, she told the responding officer about breaking up with Anaya in November after he bit the big toe on her right foot. Apparently more recently, she had given the key to her apartment to Anaya’s mother so she could retrieve his belongings, with the understanding the mother wouldn’t give the key to Anaya. The woman went home Sunday after she got a voice message from Anaya’s mom confirming they were done collecting Anaya’s things. When she got to the apartment, she told police, she was certain she locked the door.
But she heard the door open and Anaya came into her bedroom, where he asked to smell her feet, the woman said. She said he shoved her against a wall and she fell, and he first grabbed her right foot — the one he’d bitten in November — took off her shoe and sock and looked at the foot. Then he grabbed her left foot and again removed the sock and shoe, the woman said.
She tried to call 911, but Anaya grabbed her cell phone and threw it across the room. Then he bit the nail on the big toe of her left foot. As the woman began to yell and bang on the wall, he “bit more of her toe nail and then bit off the end of her toe,” the woman reported.
“Mr. Anaya bit off enough flesh to expose (the woman’s) toe bone,” the police report states.
The woman said she managed to fight off Anaya, who had a “blank look” on his face, then went to a neighbor’s place. By the time police arrived, Anaya had fled, probably off the apartment’s balcony, according to the report. The responding officer could not find the end of the woman’s toe.
It wasn’t clear Wednesday where Anaya was picked up by police before he was booked into the jail.
