Aspiring engineers will now be able to more easily transfer courses from Central New Mexico Community College to University of New Mexico, according to a new agreement between the institutions.
Administrators from both schools signed the contract Tuesday at CNM. The agreement, funded by a federal grant, is part of larger-scale program that aims to grow the number of Hispanic and low income students in science, technology, engineering and math fields, or STEM. Under the new agreement students who get associates degrees in engineering at CNM will have a more clear and what CNM called a seamless path to transfer credits to any of UNM’s seven engineering programs, according to a news release. What’s more, CNM also recently opened a center on its main campus that is dedicated to helping students in STEM fields with individualized tutoring, advising, mentoring by other STEM students, transfer help and information on degrees and resources. CNM and UNM signed a similar agreement in June that helped biology majors at the community college more easily transfer their credits to the university. That agreement was also funded by a federal grant.
