Update: APD sergeant involved in crash identified

Update Monday 11:53 p.m.:

The Albuquerque Police Department sergeant who allegedly struck a car early Sunday morning, killing a 21-year-old passenger, has been identified as Adam Casaus.

He has been with the department since July 2000 and a sergeant since May 2012, according to APD.

Casaus had engaged his emergency lights and sirens in pursuit of a drunk driver just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday on the West Side when he struck the CR-V, driven by Lindsay Browder, according to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office. Browder suffered a broken hip and fractured spine.

Her passenger, Ashley Browder, 21, died at the scene, according to BSCO.

Ashley Browder was a member of the Air National Guard based out of Reno, Nev., according to a spokeswoman with the Kirtland Air Force Base.

Update 2:43 p.m.

A 21-year-old woman died early Sunday morning when a sergeant driving an Albuquerque Police Department SUV struck  a car in which she was a passenger on the West Side, according to police.

Ashley Browder was pronounced dead at the scene, the intersection of Paseo del Norte and Eagle Ranch NW, according to Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office Captain Jessica Tyler. Lindsay Browder, 19, who was driving, was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital. She suffered a broken hip and fractured spine, Tyler said.

Officials have not released the name of the APD sergeant. He was driving west on Paseo del Norte and had engaged his emergency equipment in an effort to locate a suspected drunk driver just before 2:30 a.m., Tyler said. He struck the white Honda CR-V driven by Browder on the passenger side, she said.

The APD sergeant was also taken to the hospital for evaluation and had no major injuries, Tyler said.

There is a traffic light at the intersection but Tyler did not know the color of the lights. She also did not know if alcohol was a factor.


 

A fatal accident involving the Albuquerque Police Department occurred overnight at the intersection of Paseo del Norte and Eagle Ranch NW. State Police and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the accident.
