Legislators looking at New Mexico’s water problems

Sen. Peter Wirth, D-Santa Fe, introduced a bill today in the New Mexico legislature aimed at clamping down on the practice of selling water rights on land, then turning around and developing it by drilling domestic water wells.

SB 479 is one of a number of bills aimed at addressing the state’s acute as well as ongoing water problems. Among the other interesting bills is SB 440, introduced by Sen. Joseph Cervantes, D-Las Cruces, to deal with the problems on the Lower Rio Grande. (More on the Cervantes bill in tomorrow’s newspaper.)

A couple of legislators have called a news conference for tomorrow to talk about the range of bills being discussed. I’ll attend, and report back on what they have to say.

(this post updated to correct error in Senator’s name)
