Drought Monitor
The most recent round of snow has helped New Mexico’s drought conditions, but just barely. This week’s federal Drought Monitor categorizes 98.45 percent of the state in drought, but shows some slight improvement in northwest New Mexico as a result of spillover from storms that beefed up snowpack in the San Juan Mountains, according to Ed Polasko at the National Weather Service in Albuquerque.
New Mexico has picked up a few storms in recent weeks, but it’s the gap between storms – one to two weeks – that are the problem. “The interludes are killing us,” Polasko said Thursday afternoon.
New Mexico’s next chance at precipitation, according to the latest forecast, will happen next Tuesday and Wednesday.
