Band known for unique ways

Albuquerque-based trio Floozy worked for nearly six months to create its new album, “Open Can of Super Days.”

The all-female trio Floozy is a busy group. Whether it’s playing gigs around New Mexico or writing material, they are always on the go.

In fact, the trio is set to release its album, “Open Can of Super Days,” on Saturday. The album was recorded at Rhythm Ranch Records in Corrales with Mark Shipman engineering it. It took nearly six months to complete.

“These girls just really like to write,” says Lynette Zimmerman, band manager. “They’ve already got material ready for a new album, which is good because they want to continue making music.”

Floozy is relatively new to the local music scene. The three women – Teresa Esguerra, Bronson Elliott and Tanya Nuñez – met about a year ago through friends. The trio saw potential with the band and decided to give it a go.

“It was something that they all wanted,” Zimmerman explains. “Their old bands were going away and they saw this as an opportunity to do something different.”

Despite being a young band, Floozy is already known for its unique interpretations of classic hits and the ability to write songs that are at once funny, honest, insightful and timeless. Their diverse catalog of covers range from Britney Spears and The Beastie Boys to Buck Owens and Dolly Parton.

All three women wrote material for “Open Can of Super Days,” and Zimmerman says it was a group effort.

“When each one of them writes for the group, they write towards all their strengths,” she says. “It’s a fascinating thing to see how the music flows from them.”

They also are versed in various instruments and often change instruments for songs.

“(On) one song Teresa will play guitar and the next she’ll be on drums or something,” Zimmerman says. “The same goes for all of the other girls. They are amazing at what they do and bring so much to music.”
