ABQ office named for civil-rights activist

The city’s Housing Authority office on University is now named in honor of Carnis Salisbury, a civil-rights pioneer.

Mayor Richard Berry and other dignitaries unveiled the name on Tuesday afternoon.

Patricia Salisbury, daughter of Carnis, said her parents knew first hand the importance of fair-housing policies. When they first moved to Albuquerque, neighbors protested when they bought a house near San Mateo and Constitution, rather than in the South Broadway or Kirtland Addition areas typically home to African Americans.

They eventually grew to be friends with people who lived nearby, she said.

Berry described Carnis as a “woman who pioneered fair housing in Albuquerque.”
