Come celebrate books at UNM
The University of New Mexico Art Museum is hosting a new exhibit called, “Bound Together: Seeking Pleasure in Books.”
The exhibit celebrates the book, with 19th-century photographic albums, unusual pop-up books, elaborately illustrated works of literature and limited editions. It ends on May 25.
The museum, within the Center for the Arts complex off Redondo Drive near the UNM Bookstore, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Study continues on Jornada Basin
A joint research project by New Mexico State University and several other partners has won a $5.88 million grant to continue studies on the Jornada Basin near Las Cruces.
The grant will keep the project going for a sixth six-year funding cycle.
The Jornada Basin Long Term Ecological Research program looks at ecological change on 250,000 acres of Chihuahuan Desert land over the span of decades. Scientists can access data from land surveys dating as far back as 1858. The data include climate information, such as temperature, rainfall and evaporation, as well as soil information, erosion and wildlife.
Song needed for documentary
SILVER CITY – A Western New Mexico University project aimed at producing a documentary on Chicano music in Grant County is searching for a theme song.
The project has launched a singer/songwriter competition to select the song for the upcoming documentary.
Officials say entries must consist of original songs between 3 1/2 and 5 minutes long. Finalists will be selected by a panel of judges after a live performance, and winners will be announced in August.
The documentary will celebrate the history of Grant County Chicano musicians from the post-World War II era to the present.
Entries can be sent to canop@wnmu.edu and must be submitted by April 19.
