Science fiction and music fit together

Coheed and Cambria's music is intertwined with a comic book series done by band member Claudio Sanchez.

Coheed and Cambria’s music is intertwined with a comic book series done by band member Claudio Sanchez.

The concept of creating a comic book intertwined with the music of Coheed and Cambria was an idea that drummer Josh Eppard deemed uncool.

But, Eppard didn’t hinder singer, songwriter and guitarist Claudio Sanchez’s idea and Sanchez “ran with it” and the “sky was the limit,” Eppard said.

“When the Coheed comic books came out, I was not overly impressed, I thought they were a little cheesy,” Eppard said. “I think Claudio did, too.”

Eppard said he later watched Sanchez grow as a storyteller, and is proud of the direction Sanchez’s concept has taken, setting the group apart from other rock bands.

“The Amory Wars,” a good versus evil science-fiction epic created by Sanchez, soon took on a life of its own, and now spans five concept albums, numerous comic books and a novel co-written by Peter David. A live-action film version is now being discussed, according to a band news release.

Its latest project, a double-album “The Afterman: Descension,” released last October, and “The Afterman: Ascension,” released earlier this month, is the musical companion to a 64-page book of the Afterman story. It follows the main character Sirius on his journey into an alternate universe, where he is later possessed and forced to relive the events of his tormentor. He later returns home where negative effects follow, according to the media release.

Eppard said the creative process of how the story line for the comic books and the music come together is always different and many times spontaneous. He added that the story line and the music are dependant on each other.

“He cares immensely about the music when it’s time to do the music and cares about the story when it’s time to write the story,” Eppard said of Sanchez. “In the studio, it’s about the music. We all give it 100 percent of our attention. Claudio fills in the lines because the music inspires him to color in the story.”

The band headed back to where it all began in New York to produce “The Afterman.”

“We went back to the studio where we did our first three records,” Eppard said. “It was the studio my father built. We were tapping into that, our records of the past and having me back, was part of that.”
