ALBUQUERQUE – It was a good day, but not a great day, for the Los Alamos boys and girls teams at the swimming and diving state championships Saturday afternoon at Albuquerque Academy.
The Hilltopper girls came in sixth with a score of 170.5, while the boys were 10th with a score of 96.5.
“Overall, everybody swam to their … realistically, to how they trained this season,” coach Rusty Bernstein said. “Those who trained really well swam really well, those who didn’t train well (did not). But everybody did a good job.”

Freshman Sarah Lott had the best individual finish of the day for Los Alamos, coming in third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 55.8 seconds. La Cueva’s Nika Fellows (1:49.73) set a state record to come in first and Academy’s Gillian St. John (1:50.02) was second.
“As far as how Sarah swam, I figure those were the things she was capable of doing,” Bernstein said.
Lott also came in fourth (5:16.48) in the 500 free. Hilltoppers junior Maria Venneri finished tied for sixth (1:00.34) with Clovis’ Madison Silveira in the 100 backstroke.
On the boys side for Los Alamos, junior Trey Pereya was fifth (5:01.17) in the 500 free, while junior Connor Schultz was eighth (2:08.45) in the 200 individual medley and sophomore Sam Harris also came in eighth (56.23) in the 100 butterfly.
The Hilltoppers’ relay teams fared well, particularly on the girls side. The 400 freestyle relay team was third (3:45.46) behind Eldorado (3:36.36) and Las Cruces (3:42.11). Los Alamos’ 200 free relay squad came in fourth (1:44.16), while the 200 medley relay quartet was seventh (1:56.97).
The boys 400 free relay team came in seventh (3:29.22).
