This morning, Journal folks posted this AP item about a new White House report that provides a state-by-state breakdown of the effects of sequestration. I’m cross-posting it here because there’s a whole section on education impact, so edu-types should take note.
Specifically, the White House report estimates a loss of $6.1 million in K-12 funding, plus another $4.4 million in special education funding. There would also be severe cuts to Head Start preschool programs.
Education funding in New Mexico is already strapped; I’ll have a story in tomorrow’s paper about APS’ current budget prospects. Sequestration was also mentioned at a finance committee meeting this morning, where board member David Peercy said of sequestration: “I think that’s a bigger issue than we think it is.”
So that’s kind of grim. I’ll try to find a cat video or something for my next post to raise morale.
