Price tag for National Nuclear Security Administration South Carolina plant is rising

NNSA head Neile Miller acknowledged in a congressional hearing today that the price tag for the agency’s mixed oxide fuel plant in South Carolina (that’s “MOX”, turning weapons plutonium into a form usable in nuclear power plants) is going up. From Douglas Guarino at Global Security Newswire:

The head of the National Nuclear Security Administration acknowledged on Tuesday that the $4.8 billion cost estimate to build a facility to convert surplus nuclear-weapon plutonium into reactor fuel is “no longer valid” and that the actual price will likely be much higher.

Recall that we’ve reported previously in this space that the rising cost of the MOX plant makes it vulnerable as federal officials look for places to cut the budget.
