A bill that would provide funding to districts for home-school students who take courses at local schools has passed the Senate 29-10.
Senate Bill 302 was sponsored by Sen. Craig Brandt, R-Rio Rancho. Currently school districts do not receive funding unless a students is enrolled at least part time, which in many districts is four or more classes. The bill would give districts funding for each course a student takes, even if they are not enrolled at least part time. Albuquerque Public Schools and Rio Rancho Public Schools do not allow home-school students to take courses at local schools unless they are willing to enroll at least part-time.
Brandt said in a news release if the bill becomes law, he hopes school districts will welcome more home-school students into their classrooms.
The bill now moves to the House.
