Seattle-based indie folk quartet Ivan & Alyosha is touring in support of its latest release, “All the Times We Had.”
Sometimes false starts are worth it – just ask the guys in Ivan & Alyosha.
After beginning a follow-up to its 2010 “Fathers Be Kind” EP in 2011, the Seattle-based quartet found itself in a bit of trouble.
“It was during the summer and we had some trouble with producers and it didn’t work out,” says Ryan Carbary. “After a couple setbacks, we decided as a band to take on the project and self-produce the album.”

The band completed the album in 2012. Then the wait began.
“While mixing it, we flew out to Los Angeles and the mixing didn’t work,” he says. “So we took that on ourselves and made it work.”
The result is “All the Times We Had,” which was released on Feb. 26.
Carbary – along with Tim Wilson, Tim Kim and Pete Wilson – took grip of the band’s fate and made an album out of it.
“We’ve produced our other albums before,” he explains. “I think there’s always a little bit of fear when you are taking something over. The first two records were exciting for us because we were new at it. This time around, we’re more established and we’re pushing ourselves to the next level.”
The indie folk band was initially formed as a duo in 2007 and consisted of Carbary and Tim Wilson. Shortly after, Tim Kim and Pete Wilson joined in 2008.
In 2009, the band was recognized by NPR during the South by Southwest Music Festival.
“We’ve been lucky to have support from the beginning,” Carbary explains. “Most bands have to wait years before getting to this point.”
In the two years since the band’s last album, one could find the quartet touring the country nonstop. Carbary says touring often got in the way of writing new music.
“We were at a point where we were touring too much without new material,” he explains. “We had to get it together and get some new music out and then that became a process. Yet, going through everything we did made it a better experience for us.”
