The Jackie McGehee Young Artists’ Competition for Piano and Strings has announced the winners of the event held Feb. 16 at Keller Hall on the University of New Mexico campus.
Six winners were chosen and one honorable mention was awarded out of a field of 11 contestants. Almost $4,000 in awards were presented.
The top winner on violin was Rachel Gallegos, daughter of Daniel and Elena Gallegos of Albuquerque. Her teacher is Kristin Cram.
Maria Vigil, daughter of Dr. Anthony and Kristin Vigil, was chosen as the winner on piano. Her teacher is Lawrence Blind.

On strings:
♦ Second place went to Ivan Aidun on double bass, son of John Aidun and Joan Harris of Albuquerque. His teacher is Mark Tatum.
♦ Third place was awarded to Samantha Andrew, daughter of Alphonse and Cleona Andrew of Las Cruces. Samantha’s teacher is Carmello de los Santos.
♦ Honorable mention on violin was awarded to Brian Wade, son of Mark and Kathleen Wade of Cedar Crest. Brian’s teacher is Megan Julyan Hound.
On piano:
♦ Second place was awarded to Ken Lien, son of Ivan and Jennifer Lien of Albuquerque. His teacher is Marylene Dosse.
♦ Third place was awarded to Molly Thomas, daughter of Trevor and Rose Lopez Thomas of Albuquerque. Molly’s teacher is Terri Reck.
