Balloonists Win Amendment to ABQ Zoning Code

Albuquerque city councilors adopted a bill late tonight making it clear that the launch and landing of hot-air balloons is permissible under the zoning code.

The change was sponsored by City Councilor Michael Cook.

The proposal makes it clear that the “launching and landing of hot air balloons” is allowed in all zoning districts in Albuquerque. Separate land-use documents, such as sector development plans, could still prohibit balloons, and bans on trespassing would apply, too.

It was approved 8-0, with Councilor Brad Winter absent.
