Manhattan Project counterspy dies at 92

NEW YORK (AP) — A New Yorker who was a counterintelligence agent on World War II’s Manhattan Project to build an atomic bomb has died.

The family of Nathan Safferstein says he died Tuesday evening at his home in the Bronx. He was 92.

Safferstein was recruited in his native Connecticut in the 1940s for the project. Among other things, he eavesdropped on the phone calls of scientists and engineers to make sure no secrets were leaked.

The National World War II Memorial’s online registry includes a photo of Safferstein receiving a Bronze Star from Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves, who ran the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos.
