Hush Sound hiatus sparks new energy

After a four-year break, the indie rock band The Hush Sound is on tour.

After a four-year break, the indie rock band The Hush Sound is on tour.

Four years. That’s the time for a break needed by the four members of indie rock band The Hush Sound.

After bursting onto the music scene in 2005 and touring extensively for nearly three years, the band needed a hiatus.

“Being in the band wasn’t as fun,” says co-founder Bob Morris. “We had worn ourselves out and needed a break. We decided it was either going to be us or the band. So we took a break from the band.”

The Hush Sound, which includes Darren Wilson, Greta Salpeter and Chris Faller, has put the finishing touches on its new album.

Morris says the band has been working on some back fixes on a couple of songs.

“We’re ready for tour and have some momentum going,” he says. “We united last fall for some shows and it all felt natural. The next thing for us was to put out some music and now we’re almost done with that.”

The Hush Sound is on a trek around the West and Southwest. The band will perform for the first time at South by Southwest Music Festival since 2007.

“We’re so excited to be back on the road and it’s like a full circle for us,” he says. “We got our break at South by Southwest and we’re returning. We feel blessed.”

Formed in 2005, The Hush Sound started out playing VFWs, basements and community theaters around Chicago. Though the members were just in high school at the time, the band found its niche in the indie world by crafting lyrics that told shrewd truths and matching them with baroque pop melodies and stunning male-female vocal interplay.

The next three years saw The Hush Sound release three full-length albums – 2005′s “So Sudden,” 2006′s “Like Vines” and 2008′s “Goodbye Blues.” Along the way, the band toured with a variety of divergent acts including Phantom Planet, OK Go, Rooney, OneRepublic and The All-American Rejects.
