Santa Fe holds third gun buyback event

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — The city of Santa Fe is having its third gun buyback event, and officials say they have a total of $29,000 in gift cards to give away to those who turn in working firearms on Saturday.

The first two gun buyback events netted 418 firearms and cost the city just under $50,000.

Police Chief Raymond Rael says he’s convinced the city will prevent a tragedy by removing guns from the street that might be used to hurt someone.

The city is paying $100 for working rifles or shotguns, $150 for handguns and $200 for semi-automatic military-style weapons.

Officials say the event will end when the gift cards are gone. No IOUs will be given out this time.

The city was criticized last month when it released the names of those residents who surrendered guns to police and were issued IOUs.
