Breaking: Governor vetoes whistleblower bill

Gov. Susana Martinez has vetoed a bill aimed at giving more protections to people who complain about alleged violations of the state law governing wages paid on public works projects.

Martinez said Senate Bill 395 was overly broad and unnecessary. She said there are already protections under law for those who file complaints about prevailing wage violations.

The bill sponsored by Sen. Carlos Cisneros, D-Questa, would have prohibited Workforce Solutions Department officials from disclosing the identity of an employee who filed a complaint unless the employee consented to it.

It’s the first bill vetoed by the governor in the 60-day session, which ends Saturday.
