Rep. Pearce Featured in Front Page WSJ Article

Rep. Steve Pearce received front-page treatment in the Wall Street Journal today as the newspaper examines the Republican’s success getting elected in a Hispanic dominated district.

The story’s lede gets right to the point:

“Rep. Steve Pearce is the rarest of Republican Party officeholders, a very conservative Anglo who keeps winning elections from a predominantly Latino electorate,” the paper says.

Pearce has generally taken a more pragmatic approach to immigration reform than some of his more conservative Republican colleagues. He’s long advocated an increase in work permits (not to be confused with a path to citizenship) for Mexicans who wants to work in the U.S. and regularly return home, for example.

It will be interesting to see if the border congressman’s views get a broader hearing in the upcoming immigration debate in Congress.
