New El Paso ballpark to replace city hall

EL PASO (AP) — The 10-story city hall in El Paso will be demolished April 14 to make way for a new $50 million minor league baseball park.

City officials on Tuesday afternoon announced the demolition date as plans proceed for a new venue for the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. The MountainStar Sports Group bought the Tucson Padres in a relocation expected in time for the 2014 baseball season.

The El Paso City Council earlier voted to buy two buildings for nearly $12 million to house municipal offices.

Opponents of demolishing city hall went to court but a judge last month ruled El Paso may proceed with a bond sale to finance construction. The ballpark will be owned by the city but leased to MountainStar and partly funded by hotel taxes.
