Albuquerque Public Schools administrators are considering a school boundary change, which would mean 40 families who now attend North Star Elementary would attend Double Eagle Elementary instead.
Officials did not release details of the proposed change Tuesday, saying they wanted to contact those 40 families personally so they would not be blindsided by the news.
North Star, located north of Paseo del Norte on Ventura NE, has been at or over capacity since it opened in 2006.
The school is now about 80 students over capacity, with 743 students in a site built for 663.
A boundary change is not the only idea being considered. A committee of North Star parents and APS staffers have proposed a new district policy that would require families registering at overcrowded schools to provide additional proof of residency.
APS has also audited enrollment at the school. The audit found the school would still be overcrowded even if only students with confirmed residency attended it.
Double Eagle Elementary is less than three miles from North Star on Lowell NE, has similar test scores and is under-enrolled.
The proposed boundary change would not affect any families until next school year, and is far from final. A community meeting has been scheduled for March 28.
The proposal will then be considered by APS leadership, by the school board capital outlay committee, and then by the full board. APS spokeswoman Monica Armenta said administrators hope to have a school board vote on the issue in late April.
