House Democrats say State Rep. Luciano “Lucky” Varela is expected back at the Capitol tomorrow for the final hours of the legislative session after being hospitalized today.

“He’s absolutely fine,” House Speaker Ken Martinez, D-Grants, told House members this afternoon.

The Santa Fe Democrat was taken to a hospital after collapsing in his Capitol office this morning. Martinez said Varela had taken allergy medication that interacted with another medication and “knocked him out.”

Varela passed out briefly but was alert by the time he was taken to the hospital.

Varela, a retired state worker, is in his 14th term in the House. He is a state budget expert and deputy chairman of the House Appropriations and Finance Committee.

The 60-day legislative session ends at noon tomorrow.
