FACE-TO-FACE With St. Michael’s Jeff Groenewold

JEFF GROENEWOLD

Jeff Groenewold, a senior at St. Michael’s, is a two-time first-team All-District 5 selection and was chosen second-team All-State on last season’s Class 3A champion Horsemen. This season, Groenewold looks to lead St. Mike’s to another title after scoring 14 points, with four rebounds and two assists in a 56-41 semifinal win over Sandia Prep on Friday at the Pit.

What are all the prep sports you compete in: Soccer and basketball

Favorite sport: Basketball

Favorite athlete: Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant

What’s your favorite class in high school: Math

What are your plans after high school: “I’m going to attend college at Texas Tech. Most likely I’ll go into engineering.”

Is college athletics in your future: “No. But I love the sport of basketball and I will stay with it, whether it be coaching or playing just to play. I love the sport too much to give it up.”

How did you get your start playing competitive basketball: “I was about 4 or 5 when I started playing AAU, and have been playing ever since.”

Describe an unforgettable prep basketball moment: “Definitely it was winning state last year, but living in this moment will be in my memory forever. I’m ready for tomorrow.”

What are your hobbies outside of basketball: “Hanging out with my friends and go camping. I like the outdoors.”
