Benton to run for council
City Councilor Isaac Benton formally announced plans to run for election in District 2 in this fall. Benton is now technically the District 3 councilor, but he lives in District 2 because of redistricting. He will face Roxanna Meyers, whom the mayor appointed to the seat last year. The district covers much of the North Valley, Downtown, Barelas and some of the university area. “I am running because we need experienced and strong leaders representing our families and the traditional and historic neighborhoods of District 2,” Benton said Monday in a written statement.
Agendas for public meetings
SANTA FE — The Legislature has sent Gov. Susana Martinez a bill that would require boards, city councils and other government entities in New Mexico to make their agendas publicly available at least 72 hours before a scheduled meeting.
Currently, governmental entities in New Mexico must post agendas at least 24 hours in advance.
The state Senate passed the bill 31-0 Saturday, sending it to the governor.
Martinez is expected to sign the measure into law.
The Foundation for Open Government says this is the third year the legislation has been proposed.
Supporters say the proposed change would improve governmental transparency.
Inmate moved after violence
CLOVIS — A prisoner awaiting trial in a Clovis home-invasion killing has been moved to a state prison after several violent incidents in the Curry County Jail.
Jail Administrator Tori Sandoval said 31-year-old Jimmy Reagan was moved Friday to an undisclosed prison equipped to handle violent inmates.
Reagan faces murder and numerous other felony charges in a June 6 home invasion in which elementary school janitor Shondel Lofton was killed.
The Clovis News-Journal reported that Regan most recently is accused of stabbing a detention officer in the face with a pencil on March 9.
Reagan was previously involved in Jan. 18 and Feb. 21 violent incidents at the jail, and he now faces additional charges of felony battery of a peace officer.
