Animal Humane New Mexico, a private nonprofit that provides animal adoption, shelter and training services, will close its West Side location at 10700 Corrales Road NW on April 8.

The organization will continue to offer pet adoptions to West Side residents several times a month through a mobile adoption team that will visit businesses throughout the area, Animal Humane said in a news release.

Animal Humane opened the 2,000-square-foot Corrales Road center in mid-2010.

Based on its experience in offering adoptions from a mobile unit at the Flying Star parking lot, the organization expected to average 20 to 25 adoptions per month but the numbers haven’t consistently met that target.

Animal Humane is at present revamping its four-acre main campus at 615 Virginia SE in Albuquerque.

The $5 million project is expected to be complete in mid-2014.

Once that is finished, Animal Humane will look for a more high-traffic commercial location than the Corrales Road site for a permanent West Side location, the release said.
