NEW MEXICO BOOK NOTES

Reyna Grande, author of “Across a Hundred Mountains,” will read from and sign her new memoir, “The Distance Between Us,” at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 30 in the Salón Ortega at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, 1701 Fourth SW. Grande brings to life her tumultuous early years spent torn between two parents and two countries.

BOOK FOR TEENS: Colorado author Darby Karchut, a former Albuquerque resident, will be at Page One Bookstore at 3 p.m. today to discuss and sign her new mid-grade novel, “Finn Finnegan,” featuring teenagers fighting off hobgoblins in their suburban neighborhood. Page One is at 11018 Montgomery NE. The event is free.

AT TREASURE HOUSE: Author Greg Sagemiller signs and discusses his Southwestern thriller “Walking Earth” from 1-3 p.m. today at Treasure House Books & Gifts, 2012 South Plaza NW in Old Town. It is about a fast and perilous adventure through Navajo’s Dinetah and Utah’s canyon country with two amateur archaeologists.

From 2-4 p.m. Saturday, March 30 author Sandra Toro signs her historical novel “Secrets Behind Adobe Walls.” It is the third novel in a trilogy about the Spanish Inquisition and conversos, or hidden Jews.

AT BARNES AND NOBLE: Jonathan Miller will be signing his eighth novel, “Rattlesnake Wedding,” from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, March 30 at Barnes and Noble in Coronado Shopping Center. He also will speak on “How to Turn Your Life Into a Novel: Using Personal Experiences to Spice Up Your Writing” at SouthWest Writers at 11 a.m. April 6 at 5540 Eubank NE. There is a $5 charge for nonmembers.

NEW BOOK: Madeline Tapia is the author of “Growing Up in Bernalillo, 1934-54.” It is a bilingual historical memoir about a girl born in La Cienega in 1934. Her parents moved to Bernalillo in 1935 when she was six months old. The book is available at the Range Cafe in Bernalillo.

LOCAL HISTORY: Laurie Evans Frantz is the author of “The Turquoise Trail,” part of Arcadia Publishing’s “Images of America” series. It is a pictorial history with more than 200 vintage images. The Turquoise Trail is a quirky alternative road stretching between Santa Fe and Albuquerque. The books provides insight into New Mexico’s early mining industry and ties together the history of the towns on the trail.

IN SANTA FE: Collected Works Bookstore & Coffeehouse will hold its first monthly open-mic event for unpublished poets, authors and acoustic musicians and stage performers from 3-4:30 p.m. today. Sign-up for a 10-minute stage spot begins at 2:45 p.m.

Author Emily Rapp will read from and sign her new book, “The Still Point of the Turning World,” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 26 at Collected Works. It is the story of her journey through grief and beyond it in response to her son’s diagnosis of Tay-Sachs disease.

The bookstore also will present a reading and book signing with author Michael Clinton and his new book, “The Globetrotter Diaries” with an introduction by Bruce Adams, publisher of The Santa Fean, at 6 p.m. Friday, March 29. The book is a compilation of vignettes of Clinton’s quandaries and conundrums while trying to get from one place to another.

All the events are free. Collected Works is at 202 Galisteo St.
