The city of Santa Fe is handing out free trigger locks to gun owners willing to make the trip to Police Department headquarters at 2515 Camino Entrada.
The trigger locks will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis, according to a city news release.
A trigger lock is a mechanism that prevents a gun from being fired. Newly manufactured guns are already sold with the devices.
“Residents with firearms in their homes must take common sense steps to avoid accidental shootings,” Police Chief Raymond Rael said in the release. “The Police Department encourages storing weapons locked and unloaded with ammunition secured in a separate place.”
