Navajo broadband network nearing completion

FARMINGTON — A nearly $46 million project to spread a broadband network across the Navajo Nation is in its final stages.

Navajo Tribal Utility Authority Wireless is testing its project in select locations on the reservation, which features vast distances between communities. The company is a joint venture of the tribe’s utility authority and Commnet Wireless.

According to The Daily Times, the broadband network will provide improved wireless Internet service and cell phone service to more than 30,000 households, 1,000 businesses and an additional 1,000 community entities.

The project includes 550 miles of fiber optic cable and 32 new communications towers, and 27 existing communications towers were modified.
