The spirit of Elvis Presley will live in Albuquerque’s historic Old Town on Friday, April 5, and Saturday, April 6, in a free tribute weekend presented by the city of Albuquerque’s Cultural Services Department in partnership with the Old Town Merchants Association and the Bottger Mansion of Old Town.
From 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 5, the public is invited to participate in an Elvis karaoke concert on the Plaza where anyone can step up to the microphone and give your best Elvis impression, according to a city news release.
Guests are encouraged to dress up for an Elvis look-alike contest, wear `50s-style apparel or just come as they are and await the crowning of the best Elvis karaoke performer as “The King.”
Saturday will feature a variety of Elvis activities beginning at 10 a.m., including a display of Elvis trivia at the Gazebo and a classic car show to celebrate the style of the era, the news release said.
The popular rockabilly trio “Cowboys & Indian” will perform from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Gazebo.
And those brave enough to try fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches, there’ll be an Elvis Sandwich Stand.
Elvis came to Albuquerque in April 1956, playing two shows at the old Armory and staying at the Bottger Mansion of Old Town Bed and Breakfast, the release said.
Back then it would have cost you a whopping $1.50 to $1.75 to watch Elvis perform, but the Elvis tribute weekend won’t even cost that much — it’s absolutely free!
