Author Paul Szych believes his approach to stopping violence toward women works.
“The old reactionary approach is quickly being replaced by a more pro-active, predict-and-prevent ideology, which I’m doing,” Szych said.
The Rio Rancho resident said his approach is explained in his recent book “Dynamic Stalking Intervention.”
Despite the specificity of the title, Szych said the book considers “predictable and preventable behavior” of individuals who have shown violence toward women in many types of cases.
In a phone interview, he mentioned cases that have involved not only stalking, but also domestic violence, aggravated assault, strangulations and cases involving weapons.
“Overall (these individuals) have shown a history and are currently threatening to do the same thing to a new victim,” said Szych, who identified himself as a law enforcement officer with an unnamed department in the Albuquerque metropolitan area.
He said he has supervised more than 1,800 threat-mitigation cases on the matter of domestic violence and stalking.
Szych said he makes presentations nationwide based on the points in the book.
One of the workshops he gives is aimed at educating victim advocates, prosecutors, judges and law enforcement officers in detecting and mitigating what he termed “high-lethality offenders.”
The book, he said, “also teaches disruptive techniques that have proven to aid in the detection of unfolding events or the potential for violence but as well give clear direction to the steps needed to effectively mitigate those threats.
“The unmistakable fact is high-lethality offenders, if they aren’t mitigated, become more emboldened if no one attempts to stop them,” Szych said.
Tate Publishing is the publisher of the book. The retail price is $11.99. Copies are available at the website www.tatepublishing.com.
