Drought watch = fire watch

The Las Conchas Fire near Los Alamos smolders in early July 2011 after forcing the evacuation of more than 12,000 people and burning more than 150,000 acres, making it the largest fire in state history at the time. With drought comes increased risk of fire. My colleagues Pat Lohmann, Rene Romo and Jim Thompson collaborated on a helpful package in this morning’s paper, looking at where the fire risk may be greatest around the state, with special emphasis on southern New Mexico:
