UNM names new museum head

The University of New Mexico College of Fine Arts has announced that Lisa Tamiris Becker is the new director of the UNM Art Museum.

She has been active as a curator and arts administrator for more than 18 years. She has curated and organized more than 50 major exhibitions with a primary focus on hybrid interpretations of modern and contemporary art including many recent exhibitions at the University of Colorado Art Museum in Boulder, Colo., where she has served as director since 2002. Becker led the development and grand opening in 2010 of a new 25,000-square-foot state-of-the-art museum facility.

Her exhibitions have been reviewed in Art in America, Time Magazine and The Wall Street Journal, among other publications. Her other accomplishments at the CU Art Museum include significant growth of its permanent collection, conservation of many major works of art from across time-periods and cultures, and the development of an exhibition and catalog program that has achieved regional, national and international recognition.

Becker earned a bachelor of arts degree (magna cum laude) from the University of Pennsylvania. She earned a master of fine arts degree in studio art and art theory from the University of Texas at Austin.

A native of Leeds, England, she will be officially starting at the museum on Monday, April 1.

The UNM Art Museum is located in the Center for the Arts on the main campus adjacent to Popejoy Hall. Admission is free with a suggested $5 donation. Paid parking is available in the structure accessed from Central and Stanford. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturday, closed Sundays and Mondays.
