New Mexico’s three Roman Catholic bishops have responded the national debate on same-sex marriage by issuing a statement reiterating their belief that marriage is “a life-long bond between one man and one woman.”
The bishops rejected the idea that same-sex marriage is a civil right, while acknowledging “tragic instances of discrimination, hatred, and even violence against people with same-sex attraction.”
The statement was issued by Archbishop of Santa Fe Michael Sheehan, Diocese of Gallup Bishop James S. Wall and Diocese of Las Cruces Bishop Oscar Cantu.
Defining same-sex marriage as a civil right “would infringe upon other important rights such as the right of children to a mother and father as well as the right to religious freedom,” the bishops wrote. “The millions of persons who believe that marriage must be between one man and one woman will be compelled to accept the redefinition.”
