In Brief

Free foreclosure clinic Wednesday

A free foreclosure clinic geared to homeowners will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the third-floor conference room of the 2nd District Courthouse at the southwest corner of Lomas and 4th NW.

Foreclosures in Bernalillo County are handled in 2nd District Court through civil lawsuits filed by lenders against homeowners in default on their mortgage payments. A majority of homeowners who get sued ignore the foreclosure summons, said volunteer lawyer Allan Wainwright.

“That practically guarantees a foreclosure,” he said in the press release.

The Bernalillo County Volunteer Attorney Project is sponsoring the clinic. Homeowners who come to the clinic should bring all their paperwork with them.

Obamacare delay for small business

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is proposing a one-year delay in a feature of the new health-care law intended to give workers at small companies health-plan choices similar to what employees of large businesses enjoy.

Starting Jan. 1, small companies with up to 100 workers will be able to buy coverage through new health insurance marketplaces called exchanges. These exchanges are the small-business version of new markets also opening up for individuals.

As originally envisioned, employees would have been the ones to pick their plans. But now, for the first year, the employer will choose for the entire company.

Officials say the transition period is needed to smooth the introduction of the program.

Silverado claims bragging rights

DETROIT – General Motors says its new 22014 Chevy Silverado full-size pickup truck will get 23 miles per gallon on the highway with 5.3-liter V-8 engines. The company says that’s a little better than all of its V-8-equipped competitors.

GM also says the Silverado will have a starting price of $23,590 excluding shipping. That’s $80 less than its primary competitor, Ford’s F-150, but $950 more than Chrysler’s Ram.

Ford’s F-Series trucks are the top-selling vehicles in the U.S. The Silverado is No. 2.

GM is rolling out new the trucks in late spring or early summer.

The timing is good. Truck sales are growing after a five-year slump. The new pickups replace models that were last revamped in 2007.

GM says it has not finished testing the mileage of the six-cylinder models.
