Mayfield H.S. grad killed in Tucson crash

Alina Bourger, who played basketball for Mayfield High School in Las Cruces and graduated in 2010, was killed last week in a car crash in Tucson, where she was majoring in education at the University of Arizona, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.

Bourger, 21,  was driving her silver Toyota Corolla when she collided with a black Ford Mustang in Tucson and her car burst into flames and she died at the scene around 11:30 a.m. last Wednesday, according to an Arizona Daily Star report. The other driver suffered minor injuries.

In her senior year at Mayfield, Bourger hit two shots in the final minutes of Mayfield’s district tournament upset of then-No. 2-ranked Las Cruces High School, basketball coach George Maya told the Sun-News.

“She hit some big 3s, and I think everybody remembers that,” said Maya, who called Bourger “a beautiful person,” the paper reported.

She is survived by her sisters, father and grandparents, the Sun-News said. Her mother died in 2008.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church at 1240 S. Espina St. in Las Cruces.
